The Story
David Voltz Design is a landscape architecture firm specializing in outdoor spaces, parks, hospitality, and amusements. They build outdoor environments that bring joy to the masses.
The Assignment
When they approached us to redefine their corporate image, they were at a crossroads between the old and the new. Their history and experience lay in public works and parks, but their new target was the private sector of hospitality and amusements. To start, we had to redefine their name, as their previous acronym, DVD, led to confusion among their new audience.
The Concept
Although parks remain at the core of their business and character, they inject the same ingenuity, play, and sense of discovery into every project—no matter how small or large. Through the often winding and complicated journey of outdoor construction projects, DVDC keeps an eye on the big picture and the grand perspective. This is visually represented by the topographic maps and aerial imagery of their projects.
We developed a visual language based around monolithic, chunky type for their logomark and unique, simplified 3D iconography, each representing the pillars of their business. These shapes are inspired by toy blocks and other ephemera found on a playground. Another part of their visual language draws from signage systems at parks, often the main graphics visitors interact with. We incorporated this style into the UI and other digital elements.
The Results
Since the client had roots in parks and play, it was important to the leadership team to communicate that same sense of discovery and fun with the new brand. The result is an energetic brand identity brimming with fun, exploration, and experimentation—a true reflection of the client’s character.
